Tonight!

It's London Loves tonight. I'm so excited and I just can't hide it. This afternoon has been spent working my way through a couple of dusty old boxes full of singles that have been buried at the bottom of my room for a couple of years, and I've managed to pluck out some real gems. For example, I came across a single from Kevin Rowland (he of Dexy's Midnight Runners fame)'s infamous solo album he released a few years back. It was called "My Beauty".

I'm a big fan of Kevin Rowland, one of the last true eccentrics in pop. Here's the letter he sent to Alan McGee explaining the artwork:

Dear Alan,

I hope you're well. A few bullet points on what I'm trying to communicate:

I am not wearing women's clothes or trying to be a woman
I am wearing dresses because I choose to (who's to say I can't?)
I'm wearing men's dresses
It's not a gay or transvestite thing
It's me as a man expressing my soft sex side
In all the pictures you can see there is a strong sense of masculinity.
Please communicate the above to all the people who will be working on my project at Creation. It's really important we all know what we're communicating from the outset. My plan is to sing great and look amazing like a total star.

Best Wishes, Kevin.

I'm proud to announce that London Loves is set to have its first ever guest DJ. One of our holy trinity, Paul, can't make it until late due to work commitments but fear not! We have a worthy replacement. Step forward Mr Matty B!

Matty B steps forward

Matty B, also known as Slappy B, Nutty Slack and a whole host of other stupid nicknames, is an accomplished DJ and was president of Warwick 60s & 70s music society Underground until he resigned in disgust a few weeks ago over a matter of honour. His interests include music, playing the bass, music, music and music. We're glad to have him aboard.

Welcome

Welcome, then, to the weblog of London Loves. The initial plan was to set up a website, but having perused the websites of other club nights I rather went off this idea. On the one hand you have the uber-slick sites of large corporate clubs, which are often very shiny on the surface but once you crack the ice one tends to find nothing but dead eyes and rigor mortis grins. On the other hand you have the websites set up by little, fledging clubs such us ourselves. What tends to happen is sites get set up if not in a blaze of glory then at least a fart of triumph, then, if I am allowed to get nautical for a moment, they become a flotilla of Mary Celestes, drifting uselessly on the internet sea, abandoned straight after the initial, excited update. To put it simply: regularly updating websites is an arse, regularly updating weblogs is a piece of piss. So we've gone for the latter.

So, what to expect from this weblog? Simply, expect the moon on a stick. This main section will be a pseudo-daily depositry of pop-related gossip and ramblings, unfair character assasinations of your favourite indie-rock stars, and poorly rendered paint re-enactments of David Bowie's recent heart operation.

There's also a photo section so you can gawp at your drunken, gurning faces as you dance to your favourite London Loves tunes, a section outlining what we play and how to find us, and finally a review section for singles, albums and gigs that anyone, if inclined, can contribute to. Of course, if anyone has any further suggestions for what should go on this weblog, then don't hesitate to contact us at londonlovesmusic@yahoo.co.uk . Equally, if you have any requests for the next London Loves (which is, of course, this coming Thursday), then please email them to the above address. So far we've had requests for songs by the Supremes, The Four Tops, The Bluetones and the Style Council, which is quite a varied selection. Naturally, we reserve the right to cetegorically ignore requests if we so please, particularly if they involve The Doors.

Ooh, it's up and running! Lovely. I would like to request anything with handclaps, such as 'Come Out 2Nite' by Kenickie. Oh, but I won't be coming this month. Play it next time.

London Loves

London Loves is a virile, burgeoning indiepop club which takes place on the third Thursday of every month at the Push Bar, which is on Dean Street in Soho, London. The nearest tube is Tottenham Court Road. It starts at 8pm and ends messily at around 1am. Judging by our first night we play a mixture of non-crap indie-pop old and new, soul, motown, new wave, The Human League and Nancy Sinatra. We also unashamedly threaten to play Shed Seven, but haven't quite dared as of yet. We will do one day, though, I can assure you. When you least expect it.

If you're not sure where Dean Street is, may I point your eyes in the direction of this dinky map...

Entry is a piffling 2 pounds.
