Hurrah

Thanks to everyone who came along to another hectic and joyous night at the Soho sauna known as the Push Bar, it was lovely to meet the aquaintance of all you 20sixers and your assortment of hats. The photos are now up on the photoblog, so go and have a gander, as my old man would say.

The night was nearly a disaster - when we arrived, only one of the two CD decks were working. We were almost (but not quite) literally pooing ourselves. Fortunately, Ant did a Jesus act on the CD player, laying his healing hand on the machinery and lo, the demons were purged.

My highlights include a full dancefloor for Arrrgh! Shrimpy! classic "Let's Rock", my being accused of being on cocaine when I came, buzzing, off the decks, and Matty B's spendid final set which culminated in Suspicious Minds, Good Vibrations and Let's Get it On. What a finish, what a night, thanks to all for making it such a happy and sexy night.

James xxx

The time is nigh

So, tonight, then. London Loves. In all its musical glory. There will be drinking, there will be dancing, there will be the continuing dilemma of whether or not to play "Disco Down" by Shed Seven.

On the one side, it's a great song. It's a lot of fun to dance to. It's sung by a man from York who smells of piss.

On the other hand, it's by Shed Seven. People may think we're playing it 'ironically', by far the worst reason to play a song. It's sung by a man from York who smells of piss.

So, the Jury's still out. Only time will tell.

In other music news, my 15 year old sister's started reading Kerrang, which is a trifle unnerving. In a period of just a few short months she's started wearing black clothes and a great deal of bracelets whilst acquiring an appreciation of "Jackass". Naturally I'm concerned, but then I try and put it all into some kind of perspective. After all, when I was 15 I was listening to Pink Floyd, perputrators of some of the worst crimes against music of all time (I will still defend a couple of their albums, but even that feels like saying "Hitler had some good ideas").

So. 8pm till 1.10am ish. Indie and soul. Any requests?

The picture, by the way, is of the floor of my room at the mo x

newshoes on 19 August 2004 at 16:26
Right I won't be there, but please play some Shed 7 (I do love them so). Then I will feel part of the event...

Hyper-Conscious on 19 August 2004 at 16:29
Surely her reading Kerrang! is better than reading The Vibe or Mixmag?

londonloves on 19 August 2004 at 16:29
Ok, you've swung it. Shed Seven make their belated London Loves debut x

londonloves on 19 August 2004 at 16:29
aye midgetcircus, that's what Paul said. Kerrang is a path to good stuff, whereas Mixmag is a blind alley leading to pain and misery

Loopy_Luda on 19 August 2004 at 16:33
Upside Down by Diana Ross.....or is that pushing it?!

newshoes on 19 August 2004 at 16:36
Hurrah! It'll be as if I'm practically there in person!

Bobble on 19 August 2004 at 16:38
So many choices.
I think somewant wanted Pulp to kick someone's arse to ;o) I think something from "His n' Hers" would be appropriate.

londonloves on 19 August 2004 at 16:40
Wow, these are all such fantastic requests, conveniently fitting under the category "stuff I was likely to play anyway". Pulp is a deffo, and I reckon Matty or Paul would play the Diana Ross tune if it's the one I'm thinking of...

em on 19 August 2004 at 16:52
And that is why we love it so. Please please, please, DON'T play common people because it makes me feel guilty. However, anything else (especially, especially mis-shapes) is fine with me.
Also, please play Lush. Single girl or Ladykillers or anything you fancy really.

em on 19 August 2004 at 17:05
btw , I'm currently listening to Huey Lewis and The News. Am I still allowed to come?

newmalden on 19 August 2004 at 17:15
Lush may be tricky but I'll have a fumble and see what I can find. Huey Lewis & The News is a 'maybe'.

As in maybe not.

em on 19 August 2004 at 17:23
it's okay, I've moved onto Heart now.
.
.
.
.
"... I never really cared until I met yooooooooooooooooooo"
etc.
I just need to get it out of my system, guv.
(can you play Echobelly - Great Things?? I would die if you did! Okay, dance a bit. Probably on my own.)

BigBadDom on 19 August 2004 at 18:07
em: i want to know what love is! - just by the way sonja is in my kickboxing class...

angel_less on 20 August 2004 at 02:51

Dream

I had my first dream about London Loves last night. In the dream, the DJ booth had a sink in it, which was full of dirty dishes. I had to finish washing and drying the dishes before the club opened. I finally finished with seconds to spare, then it turned out I had the wrong day. The club was/is actually on the 19th of August. So I washed all those dishes for nothing.

Correction!

Actually, the next London Loves is on the 19th August not the 12th.

Ta!

Hot damn, I was just about to come here and write the very same thing. Yes, it is in fact on the 19th of August, but you already know that now, I suppose. A hundred thousand apologies.

In more music related news, I'm shocked to discover that the continuing adventures of smack-addled loser Pete Doherty have made the national press! Not just the tawdry tabloids, but the staid, cheese fixated Independent. I really, really, really hope he doesn't kill himself, otherwise we'll have another Cobain on our hands - staggeringly overrated songswriter & lyricist deified as a creative genius just because he had the temerity to shoot himself, boringly, in the head. Or Jim Morrison, looked upon as a God by many deluded fools because he deigned to die, boringly, in a bath.

Pete deserves more/less than that.

Happy ever after in the market place

I listened to The Beatles to death when I was a kid, and ever since have unfortunately associated them with being kids’ music, not worthy of adult consumption. Obviously I’m entirely aware how wrong I am about this, but I still think they’re slightly overrated. Sgt Pepper’s lonely heart’s club band, for example, is still the aural equivalent of a horrible, bloated corpse. So how on earth they followed it up a year later with The White Album I really have no idea. A modern equivalent would be Ocean Colour Scene following up Mosley Shoals with inventing the hovercraft.

The White Album’s by far my favourite Beatles Album. Sure, it’s far too long, but then so was Be Here Now and you never heard anyone complaining about that. The thing I like the most about The White Album is the sneaking suspicion that they were taking the piss. I mean, yes, I’m talking about an album that contains The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill, Rocky Raccoon, and Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da. But it also contained Dear Prudence, While My Guitar Gently Weeps, and Blackbird, McCartney’s solo acoustic rendition of which was the only moment of dignity in his Alan Partridge thumbs-up gurn fest of a Glastonbury set. And heck, I even like the crap ones. I’m listening to ‘Piggies’ at the moment, and yes, it’s silly. But it still contains more spark and invention than, say, the entire career of the Manic Street Preachers.

We're back!

Suddenly, the next London Loves lurks like a low-flying vulture, so I suppose I'd better start updating this here weblog methingie and wholeheartedly plugging like a coke-addled plug monster from plugging town.

The next London Loves is a week on Thursday - August 12th 2004. There's an exciting development for this third installment of London Loves - after my moaning to the owner about the lack of vinyl turntables, it turns out that there *are* in fact vinyl turntables, it's just hardly anyone ever uses them so they were hidden upstairs. This means my entire vinyl collection can be unleashed on the next night, which means many more tune-related possibilities.

Of course, there is the small problem of how to carry my records to smelly Soho. I'm not a superstar DJ so I don't have a record box, and I get the impression they're going to be rather costly. So, any ideas or suggestions for the safe, cheapskate carrying of old and valuable (emotionally, at any rate) records?
