Pictures

I've finally uploaded the photos from the last London Loves, namely the one that took place on 16th of September. I was hindered slightly by the fact I forgot to bring my camera, but I've done the best I possibly could with the resources I had to hand; namely, paint and my memory.

Enjoy.

Beautiful. And startlingly accurate.

Denny on 29 September 2004 at 21:51
Where did you get that picture from?

newmalden on 30 September 2004 at 14:47
I took it, ooh, about a year ago. I think it may have been after we went to see Damon Albarn, but then again it may not have been then. In conclusion, not sure.

so when's the next one? Bingebabe and I will be in attendance

Matchbox 20

Since I became an adult and succumbed to the coruscating and seductive cathedral of hating, I've kept a "5 worst bands of all time" list. The list fluctuates depending on who's annoying me at any given time. The current list is:

1) The Manic Street Preachers
2) The Doors
3) The Red Hot Chili Peppers
4) Muse
5) Matchbox 20

The internet's finest news source, The Onion, seems to be in agreement with my number five:

What about all those almost-ran punk bands like UK Subs? They were shit.

vanishingpoint on 28 September 2004 at 17:03
What about Madness? Truly the most annoying band. Ever. Genesis are pretty high up too. And Oasis.

newmalden on 28 September 2004 at 17:17
I'd agree with Genesis, to an extent. I can't be bothered to hate stuff that isn't worthy of hatred, so there goes UK Subs. My personal vision of hatred doesn't actually involve utter awfulness, it's utter averageness, hence Matchbox 20 and the Manics. Oasis, you either hate them or love them, but people who say they're indifferent to them are lying. And people who say they hate them evidently haven't heard Bonehead's Bank Holiday.

vanishingpoint on 28 September 2004 at 17:44
Okay i'll nominate The Stereophonics. The only word I can think to describe them is "dirge".

newmalden on 28 September 2004 at 18:33
The Stereophonics certainly made an earlier incarnation of my list, but they're silent at the moment and so consequently are not currently annoying me.

vanishingpoint on 29 September 2004 at 10:49
It's only a matter of time though.

acenturyoffakers on 07 October 2004 at 11:42
urg i think you need maroon 5 in there too.and defo's stereophonics. just why.
agreement on RHCP and the manics.

Cheers to everyone who came along last Thursday. It was the best one yet, musically, boogielifically and groove-town speaking.

Here's an entirely uncomprehensive list of what we played at the night, in no particular order, except in the case of Denny's set(s), as he seems to have remembered exactly what he played and in what order too. The man's a genius, or didn't drink enough. One of the two.

best london loves yet, eh?
i see no 'suspicious minds' (live) in that list nor, somewhat biazarrely, any oasis.
i will be back at christmas to rectify the situation, if not beforehand....

newmalden on 18 October 2004 at 16:09
The lack of Oasis was an inexplicable oversight, one that shall (no doubt) be categorically put right on Thursday.

The Meaning of Soul

16 September 2004 at 17:01

The NME website today reveals the terrifying fact that Liam Gallagher has written 52 new songs. 52.

52.

I still check out the NME website for music news every day, but I'm not entirely sure why. It's not like anyone's going to say anything interesting, or do anything entertaining. The top three stories were "The Strokes cancel new live album", "Keane continue to exist" and "Matt Bellamy out of Muse buys a loaf of bread". These were all nuggets of information I could have lived without.

But Liam writing 52 new songs? The mind boggles.

Oh, yes. It's London Loves tonight.

Any requests?

They are probably mild variations on G, C, D and Am. And all probably include the word shine.

londonloves on 16 September 2004 at 17:27
All I know is one of them is called "They ain't got nothing on me, they ain't got nothing on you".

Hyper-Conscious on 16 September 2004 at 17:32
Good to see he's using his brain again then.

phenomenoncompulsion on 16 September 2004 at 18:06
Or what they left him of it following the prefrontal lobotomy.
D.

awesomelies on 16 September 2004 at 18:14
I have a request!
Could you please play Blitzkrieg Bop in honour of the late Johnny Ramone?

newmalden on 20 September 2004 at 17:18
Doh! Entirely forgot.

SoCheap on 21 September 2004 at 13:06
I missed it cos I was a bit poorly. Was a good time had by all? Hope you played the Ramones (unless it was a song that started 1, 2, 3, 4, seeing as there's only one of them left now)

newmalden on 21 September 2004 at 15:57
*all* their songs start 1-2-3-4. It was a really really good night, no 20sixers in attendance though, as they all hate me. But we were happy because this was the best attendance in terms of getting people off the streets...

Damn I'm away again.

em on 14 September 2004 at 01:14
I will be there. It is the one night out I am allowed a month, owing to the none job situation.

newmalden on 14 September 2004 at 18:00
Hurrah!

^^

Cheshire_Cat_Kam on 15 September 2004 at 16:34
I will also be there grinning away in the corner, tho won't be bringing my kebab inside.

em on 16 September 2004 at 17:37
I retract the above statement. I won't be there. Could you possibly have it tomorrow night instead? Cheers.

newmalden on 16 September 2004 at 17:49
I'm afraid that may be tricky to arrange, though in the medium/long term getting ourselves a Friday night spot would be A Good Idea.

John Harris

Some of this I agree with, some of this is complete bobbins

John Harris
Thursday September 9, 2004
The Guardian

Roll over Sid, and tell Joe Strummer the news: whereas the kind of British musicians who attracted words like "alternative" were once duty-bound to affect a mixture of rage, debauchery and indolence, their modern heirs are a terrifyingly well-adjusted bunch. Tuesday evening provided conclusive evidence: when Alex Kapranos, singer with the allegedly iconoclastic Franz Ferdinand and fan of the word "fantastic", accepted the Nationwide Mercury Prize, his speech proved that the last embers of punk attitude have been long since snuffed out.

"We didn't really expect to win this," he said. "We are truly gobsmacked. It's fantastic. We feel very chuffed, very honoured - particularly this year when we're surrounded by such fantastic music. The bands this year do reflect a trend in the UK towards fantastic music."

His words were rather reminiscent of another ceremonial oration, made at the 1996 Brit Awards: "It's been a great year for British music. A year of creativity, vitality, energy. British bands storming the charts; British music back once again in its right place, at the top of the world." Tony Blair said that.

I never thought I'd see the word "inclusivist" used in such a disparaging way.

Read this article in the paper earlier today.
Can't say that I am going to shed many tears that no one has written a song about Tony Blair. Most 'political' music is, sadly, crap.
The other point which struck me is that the lack of political discourse in music at the moment, is merely a reflection of the lack of engagement most people have with politics (record low turn-outs in recent elections) and the capatlist/free trade political hegemony that seems to have set in since the end of the cold war.
Is it any wonder that musicians don't write any political songs when the rest us have little or no appetite for the stuff.

Oasis continue to be best

Just a little reminder to all Oasis fans (ie everyone in the whole world, particularly those who say they hate them then secretly go home and cry themselves to sleep over the searing incomparable beauty of "Cast no Shadow") that the chief, Mr Noel Gallagher, will be on Radio 1 tonight being interviewed by Steve "teeth fall out during interviews as he has leprosy" Lamacq and Jo "worst DJ and interviewer in the history of the world and thoroughly vile woman to boot" Wiley. Wiley broke Lamacq's heart, he's been wearing the same clothes since Britpop died. But forget about her, Steve. She's not worth it.

My my, I haven't listened to Radio 1 in years. There has been absolutely no point since the last decent DJs (Mark & Lard) departed and Zane Lowe took over the traditional Lurpack role.

Anyhoos, Noel'll be on from 9pm. Enjoy.

I can't stand Jo Wiley either. She is vile, and crap dj also, tho i don't listen to radio 1 either.

Embrace's new single...

...is a top ten hit. Number 7. I have a single question:

Why?

--------------------------------------------------------

_dot_ on 05 September 2004 at 22:32
what? who?

newmalden on 06 September 2004 at 15:51
Exactly.

sw on 06 September 2004 at 16:46
It's crap, sounds like Coldplay, maybe that's why it's in the top ten, the tone deaf public seem tothink it's good. idiots.

Hyper-Conscious on 06 September 2004 at 16:57
It sounds like Coldplay because it was written by Chris Martin, why he gave it to Embrace though I have no answers to.

londonloves on 06 September 2004 at 17:06
He gave it to Embrace because they couldn't muster a tune of their own for a comeback single. The dullards. Chris also wrote "See it in a Boy's Eyes" for the fragrant Jamelia and very nearly sang the chorus to The Streets' "Dry Your Eyes". He is very posh and has a weakness for annoying American actresses. He lives in Hull.

Sadly it wasn't the one on the cover of Be Here Now

I'm not really an ebayer, but I must say that this item caught my attention.

Perhaps if we all chipped in together we'd have a chance of buying it? Then we could be like ZZ Top with their stupid car, or Eighties shitbox wankline de-wanker with their particularly stupid car, except, y'know, really cool? We could park it outside the club and charge punters five pounds to look at it, or to be seen near it.

Oasis.

--------------------------------------------------------

SoCheap on 03 September 2004 at 14:22
Hmmm, buying a car on eBay sounds a bit scary. Let's do it.
