Great pics James, but is it really December already?
londonloves on 22 November 2004 at 18:07
Ha! Have already sorted that particular error.
onwardsandsideways on 22 November 2004 at 18:10
Ok. I stand corrected. I'm just dead chuffed that I'm not in any of them. Thank God!
[anonymous] on 22 November 2004 at 18:10
Ah Edmundo Ros, where would we be without him?
londonloves on 22 November 2004 at 18:11
The picture of you must be in my "not fit for human consumption" pile...
onwardsandsideways on 22 November 2004 at 18:15
Oh good. It can stay there.

Cheers
Thanks to all the 20sixers who came along last night. You're amazing, each and every single one of you, and there's a good chance that I may be physically attracted to you.Apologies head out to Chauncey for once again failing to play his request. My excuse this time is rather lame - I was lost in a sea of vinyl, and the bag with my Cds was underneath two other bags and some kind of stool (the wooden not poo-related kind), and I never quite got round to badgering the thing out of its nest. Next time round it shall be played twice. Possibly in succession.
Next London Loves will be the staggeringly drunken Christmas special on Thursday December 16th, to which Denny promises to bring his James Brown Christmas album (sample lyric - "Yo baby Jesus! Get on up of that thang") and I promise to bring Ten Benson's slightly evil Christmas hit "Black Snow" (There were no churchbells ringing. There were no children singing. Just a great big snowman all alone. Black snow!). And after that, who knows? We desperately want a Friday night, so that many more people can come along and so we're not responsible for quite so many desperate Friday morning hangovers. We want to be responsible for Saturday morning hangovers instead. It is how it should be. So we'll see.
Below is what I can remember playing last night.
Have a good weekend everyone,
James xxxx
First set:
Half Man Half Biscuit - God gave us life (but he also gave us Little and Large)
The Delgados - Everybody Come down
Ultrasound - I'll show you mine
The Hidden Cameras - I believe in the blood of life
Belle & Sebastian - Photo Jenny
Murray the Hump - No Girl No Sex
The Soundtrack of our Lives - Bigtime
Bloc Party - Helicopter
Gorky's Zygotic Mynci - Heart of Kentucky
Second set:
The Killers - All these things that I've done
Hot Hot Heat - Bandages
The Rapture - House of Jealous Lovers
Franz Ferdinand - Darts of Pleasure
The Zutons - Don't ever think too much
Dexy's Midnight Runners - Jackie Wilson says (I'm in heaven when you smile)
(*fzzzzz*. At this point the power went out. Thanks to all those who clapped along in the interim)
Stevie Wonder - Superstition
The Contours - Do you love me
Al Wilson - The Snake
Diana Ross & The Supremes - You keep me hanging on
Diana Ross & The Supremes (Diana Ross double whammy) - Stop! In the name of love
The Beatles - Back in the USSR (you don't know how lucky you are boy)
Le Tigre - Hot Topic
p.s. pictures up when my camera battery recharges. You have been warned.

Can I put in a request for Boney M next time? They're awfully festive.
(you can borrow my cd if you don't have any *ahem*)
londonloves on 19 November 2004 at 16:31
There was a cat who really *was* gone.
Bobble on 19 November 2004 at 16:43
BoneyM - quality choice.
You played B&S for me, and I see my fave Raptures track. Thank you LL
newmalden on 19 November 2004 at 16:44
Yes. Seems I'm better at remembering the requests of people who couldn't make it rather than those who actually came. Heh.
[anonymous] on 19 November 2004 at 17:33
I forgive you, but only because they played it in the Ship before we came down.
[anonymous] on 19 November 2004 at 17:34
Oh, and because it was, as always, a grand night.
SoCheap on 19 November 2004 at 17:56
It was a smashing night out. I am keeping an eye out for indie stripey jumpers from now on.
awesomelies on 19 November 2004 at 18:44
Well, if we're doing Christmas stuff... obvious, I know, but can we have Fairytale of New York?
newmalden on 20 November 2004 at 13:50
Merry Christmas, you arse, I hope it's your last
onwardsandsideways on 20 November 2004 at 16:42
Fantastic night at my LondonLoves debut. I vaguely remember you taking a picture of us, and will be very scared to see it seeing as though I'd been downing pints since 6.30...
onwardsandsideways on 22 November 2004 at 18:03
Great pics James (Thank god, none feature me!) But is it really December already?

Tonight!
Have you ever wondered what Noel Gallagher would look like if he was a Manga cartoon? Well, wonder no more.
London Loves tonight. Cheers for your requests, I'll play what I can (and indeed want to). Guns & Roses is something I've been itching to play for ages. Because I'm completely shameless.
Any more requests while I'm in the computer hood?

I'm in the mood for The Killers, or maybe Kings of Leon. Sonic would like some Pavement.
antieverything on 18 November 2004 at 14:49
Ned's Atomic Dustbin.
newmalden on 18 November 2004 at 14:54
Well! I shall be playing The Killers, and would gladly play Pavement. As for Ned's Atomic Dustbin, I'd rather play Half Man Half Biscuit...
[anonymous] on 18 November 2004 at 14:55
ooh Pavement, get in!
Bobble on 18 November 2004 at 14:57
He looks a bit Jason like in Gatchaman doesn't he?
LondonLoves I will have to love and leave you for tonight - packing for a trip to Amseterdam tomorrow. Thanks for the muso recommendations again.
londonloves on 18 November 2004 at 15:04
Fair enough bobble. Anything I can play in your absence?
Bobble on 18 November 2004 at 15:05
Some B&S? Ta, very much.
Hyper-Conscious on 18 November 2004 at 15:06
I've often been laying awake at night unable to get to sleep do to the fact I have been unable to form a clear picture in my head of what NG would look like as a Manga cartoon so tonight I may sleep for the first time in 4 months.
Howzabout playing some Ride or JAMC?
erudite_baboon on 18 November 2004 at 15:40
How much is it to get in to London Loves? I only have £1.82 in my wallet.
David1 on 18 November 2004 at 16:32
I want Carter. Is that sad?
Hyper-Conscious on 18 November 2004 at 16:36
Babs - I think it's £2.
erudite_baboon on 18 November 2004 at 16:43
It's ok - I have managed to borrow 20p - I'm in! And I have 2p to spend on drinks!
TheSocialMenaces on 18 November 2004 at 16:47
EB - just don't spend that in one go.
David1 - Carter would be good. Preferably Sheriff Fatman though.
notsopinkanymore on 18 November 2004 at 17:39
I shall also have to pass tonight - don't have too much fun without me!

TheSocialMenaces on 17 November 2004 at 16:08
I second the above!
Also, any chance of Temptation by New Order? I'll love you forever.
awesomelies on 17 November 2004 at 16:12
Some sort of John Peel tribute would seem to be appropriate...
onwardsandsideways on 17 November 2004 at 16:15
I second TSM's request and third Em's.
See you all tomorrow!
Queeneroo on 17 November 2004 at 16:19
I'd like some Guns N Roses.
TheSocialMenaces on 17 November 2004 at 16:23
I'm always partial to a bit pf GnR myself.
Queeneroo on 17 November 2004 at 16:32
And some Big Fun.
[anonymous] on 17 November 2004 at 16:59
Ooh ooh got any Lee Hazlewood?
I'll love you forever too, but you probably wouldn't like that as much.
SoCheap on 18 November 2004 at 12:44
How about some songs about what an arse George Bush Jr is? That would be both timely and appropriate.
londonloves on 18 November 2004 at 14:40
A good percentage of these requests will be played.
John Peel tribute - thing is, it's impossible *not* to play some kind of John Peel tribute if you play guitar music of some description.

Rooting through old records
I've just discovered I own Fade to Grey by Visage. I'm not entirely sure how or whyExpect to hear it on Thursday.

Kate_Sith on 15 November 2004 at 18:30
No no no! You *have* to wait till I get there!
(I could bring in a scratchy old 7" of the Model by Kraftwerk to accompany it if you like)
newmalden on 15 November 2004 at 18:45
We played The Model last month! Admittedly very early, though.
Visage may be delayed until your return, then.
Kate_Sith on 16 November 2004 at 11:37
Hurrah! Hurrah!

London Loves music doctor
I've been skulking around 20six like a dirty habit, reading your various "top ten albums" lists in your various "more about me" sections. I'm going to recommend music/albums that I think particular 20sixers will like, judging by the albums and artists they already adore. As a public service, naturally.Feel free to say "duh, yeah, I've already got all their stuff" or "sweet jesus no, they're fecking awful" or what have you in response to my recommendations. I also apologise for my presumptuousness.
1) Bobble
Judging by your admittedly rather fine music taste (Muse excepted, obviously), you're a lady who likes sophisticated, wry pop with lyrics you could amputate a leg with. With this in mind, I wholeheartedly recommend The Magnetic Fields, perhaps with "69 love songs" as a starting point. I assume you're already a Scott Walker fanatic, so won't mention him, and would also prod you in the direction of Richard Hawley (occasional Pulp guitarist and all-round God) for some nice, warm Roy Orbison style warblings. He has an excellent downloads page on his website (click here) so get yourself his live version of 'Darlin to see if his thang floats your boat.
2) Em
A good list. I particularly like the "any Motown compilation" one. Be careful what you wish for, as I promise you a copy of "Motown 80's Hits Volume 1" will be as welcome as a snog from a rotting fish. If motown tickles your monkey, I'd advise heading backwards and devouring a couple of Northern Soul compilations, then heading sideways and checking out what on earth was going on in Jamaica at around the same time. Yes, that's right, I'm thinking early ska. Buy a Prince Buster compilation. Go on, I dare you. You'll love it.
With regard to the indie end of the spectrum, I get the impression that, like me, you yearn for simpler days of catchy tunes and enjoyable lyrics as opposed to the bog of cooler-than-thou mush we seem to have got ourselves mired in. I'm particularly delighted to see an appreciation for the none-less-cool Supernaturals. For something (a bit) more recent, I'd heartily recommend a copy of the Murray the Hump album, songs of "ignorance", one of the best - but sadly also most ignored - albums of the 90s. In fact, you won't be able to find a copy. So I'll burn it for you, along with the best of Bis, which I've finally got around to doing.
3) FelineVamp
I suggest Slade and Oasis.
That's enough for now. Apologies again if this sounds twatty, I thought it was a good idea but I'm less certain now. Comments, abuse etc...
London Loves x
p.s. Any more requests for Thursday?

Bobble on 15 November 2004 at 16:09
LL - you are all heart and on the button with my tastes. Keep up the fine recommendations.
londonloves on 15 November 2004 at 16:13
That's a relief x
sillylad on 15 November 2004 at 16:14
Could you play Inbetweener by sleeper. I'll not be there, but I heard in on the radio this morning and thing it deserves an airing.
londonloves on 15 November 2004 at 16:17
Paul bravely played "Sale of the Century" at the last one, and that went down well. So possibly. But then, I could just say that we played it and you would be none the wiser. Mu-hahaha.
sillylad on 15 November 2004 at 16:21
cunning.
Kate_Sith on 15 November 2004 at 16:25
I might not be able to make it, as have a work thing, so don't play the League without me! Or is it really on Friday this month, in which case I probably can make it and stay out late too.
londonloves on 15 November 2004 at 16:33
Gak - a Friday is the holy grail.
em on 15 November 2004 at 17:03
oooo! aw! thanks! that's so sweet.
and i'm def coming on thurs, tho i'm going to the theatre first cos i'm cultured and that, so will be later than usual (and hopefully, not as pissed)
awesomelies on 16 November 2004 at 03:25
By "Sale of the Century went down well", surely you mean "there was one Sleeper fan on the dancefloor and the rest of us didn't have the heart to abandon him in his hour of need"?
em on 16 November 2004 at 11:43
i would have danced! if i'd been there/conscious! probably.
[anonymous] on 16 November 2004 at 17:24
Now that people have probably stopped reading the comments to this entry, may I confess a hidden love of Sleeper.
Kate_Sith on 16 November 2004 at 18:00
*points and dances round*
You like Sleeper! You like Sleeper!
sillylad on 16 November 2004 at 18:18
Yes. I. Do.
velvetmorning on 16 November 2004 at 18:30
It is I who played Sleeper and my verdict on them is thus: about 6 good songs, most of them good at a disco.

London Loves returneth
Shit! Ol' Dirty Bastard is dead! This saddens me greatly. His 1999 hit "Got your money" (featuring then-starlet Kelis) is one of the greatest pop songs ever. It looks like I'll have to make this Thursday's London Loves a John Peel / Ol' Dirty Bastard tribute night, which would make for a rather eclectic playlist.London Loves returns for, shockingly, London Loves V, this Thursday 18th November at the Push Bar, Dean Street, Soho. 8pm till 1am, dancing and sugar, love and togetherness. And pop. Things to look out for this month:
- Sweets
- Brave attempts at DJing with Vinyl (it's been a while)
- Stupid glasses
- Shed 7?
--------------------------------------------------------

Ah Shed Seven.....
Is it too early to get a request in?
If not (and if frankly) can I have a little bit (or better still all) of Tin Soldier by the Small Faces? You know it makes sense.
Rock on!
londonloves on 15 November 2004 at 15:32
Bollocks, forgot that last time. I shall redouble my efforts this time round.
Repeat it, James. Tin Soldier, Tin Soldier, Tin Soldier...
iyers on 15 November 2004 at 16:11 ( Comment Modified)
Is he? shit....play "Shimmy shimmy y'all" for ODB....."ooh baby I like it raaaaw"
sob...
